Eric Clapton’s life was forever altered by the heartbreaking death of his 4-year-old son, Conor, on March 20, 1991. Conor tragically fell from a 53rd-floor window in Manhattan after a housekeeper accidentally left it unlatched.
At the time, Clapton was in New York and had just spent a day at the circus with Conor, vowing to become a more involved father.
In the hours before the tragedy, Clapton was on his way to pick up Conor. However, his partner, Lory Del Santo, checked a fax before leaving, which delayed her, ultimately leading to Conor’s fatal fall. Devastated by the loss, Clapton withdrew from the public eye and spent nearly a year in isolation in Antigua, turning to music as a way to cope with his grief.
He poured his heartache into the deeply personal song “Tears in Heaven.” Tragically, just days before his death, Conor had written a letter to his father that arrived after the funeral. The note, which simply said “I love you,” served as a heartbreaking reminder of the precious bond they had lost.
