His mother, Irmelin Indenbirken, had a difficult life.She was born in Germany in the 1940s and spent part of her childhood literally underground , escaping the horrors of war .
Later, hoping for a better future, Irmelin moved to the United States, where she met artist and comic book writer George DiCaprio .
Their relationship did not last long – the couple broke up when Leo was just a baby – but despite this,they both stayed close to their son and did everything possible to make his childhood happy.
The family settled in Hollywood, which at the time was not the glitz and glamor we know today . It was a dangerous , noisy area , not the best place for a child .
