Few would disagree that Nicole Kidman is a gifted, accomplished, and strikingly beautiful actress. Yet despite her great success, the Australian-born star has faced deep personal challenges throughout her career — including the very public highs and lows of her marriage to Tom Cruise. Recently, Kidman opened up about their relationship and the painful end of it.
Nicole and Tom first met while filming Days of Thunder in 1990. Cruise, fascinated by Kidman’s performance in Dead Calm, pushed for her to be cast opposite him. When they finally met, the chemistry was immediate. Kidman has said she was completely stunned by Cruise’s presence and energy — even though he was still married to actress Mimi Rogers at the time.

“I’d had several meaningful relationships before Tom, but I never thought I’d marry anyone,” she once said. “Then he came along — the most extraordinary, unusual man I’d ever encountered.”

Cruise felt the same, calling Kidman the love of his life and describing their connection as instant and profound. Their whirlwind romance led to a quiet Christmas Eve wedding in Telluride, Colorado, attended only by close family and a few friends, including Dustin Hoffman.

Kidman hoped to start a family right away, but she suffered an ectopic pregnancy shortly after the wedding. The couple then turned to adoption, welcoming daughter Isabella in 1992 and son Connor in 1995. Since both children later embraced Scientology like their father, Kidman has acknowledged that she became distant from them, though she insists she keeps that part of her life private.

After 11 years of marriage, Cruise unexpectedly filed for divorce. For Kidman, the news was devastating.
“Our life felt perfect. It took me a long time to recover. It completely shocked me,” she admitted. She later described herself as “damaged” and unsure she’d ever find love again.
Despite endless speculation about the reasons behind their split, Kidman has consistently spoken with grace about her ex-husband. In 2006, she even said she still loved him.
In more recent interviews, Kidman has begun sharing how overwhelming the media scrutiny was after their breakup. Looking back, she says she was incredibly young — already married with two children by 27 — and the constant tabloid attention overshadowed her work.

Now happily married to musician Keith Urban, Kidman says she tries to stay open-hearted despite past hurts. When Urban first asked her, “How’s your heart?”, she answered simply: “Open.”
