Jennifer Lawrence stirred major backlash after candidly explaining why she no longer wanted a dog living in her home—a confession that left many animal lovers stunned.
The 35-year-old actress revealed that she rehomed her Chihuahua and made a hyperbolic joke about wanting to erase dogs entirely, a remark that quickly ignited criticism online.
“That’s awful—she shouldn’t own a pet,” one commenter wrote, echoing the reaction of many outraged fans.

Jennifer Lawrence explains why dogs now frighten her
Lawrence made the remarks during a Q&A session following a screening of her new film Die My Love at New York City’s 92nd Street Y on January 7.
The Hunger Games star shared that her perspective on dogs drastically changed after becoming a mother to her 3-year-old son, Cy, and welcoming a second child in 2024 with husband Cooke Maroney.
While addressing the audience, Jennifer spoke openly about rehoming her beloved Chihuahua, Princess Pippi Longstocking, whom she adopted in 2017.

“She’s alive, she’s happy, and she’s with my parents,” Lawrence clarified, stressing that the dog was not abandoned.
She explained that city life wasn’t ideal for the pet, adding that she once chose her apartment location specifically to be near a park for her dog. “But after I had kids,” she admitted, “dogs started to feel really scary to me.”
“I just see them as a threat now”
According to Lawrence, her fear intensified after a dog bit her son—an incident that deeply altered how she perceives dogs around children.
“When my son walks up to a dog, I don’t even recognize dogs the same way anymore,” she said. “I just see danger.”
She then exaggerated for comedic effect, saying the experience made her want to “obliterate every dog,” a remark she delivered jokingly but one that didn’t land well with many listeners.
The actress doubled down with an over-the-top rant meant to highlight her anxiety as a parent, but the comments quickly circulated online without context, fueling outrage.

From Team Dog to Team Cat
Lawrence went on to reveal that she now identifies as firmly Team Cat and currently owns a cat named Fred.
“Cats are so misunderstood,” she said. “They’re jerks—and that’s what makes them hilarious.”
She jokingly described how Fred often appears in the room while she and her husband are watching TV, pretending it’s a coincidence.

Internet backlash pours in
The actress’s honesty triggered a flood of critical responses online.
“This tells me everything I need to know about her,” one user wrote.
“People don’t just get rid of family members when things get hard,” another commented.
Others accused Lawrence of being irresponsible, arguing that dogs only become dangerous when poorly trained or when boundaries aren’t established between pets and children.
“Having kids isn’t an excuse to discard a pet,” one commenter said. “Plenty of families manage both.”
Several critics went further, claiming the remarks permanently changed how they viewed the Oscar winner. “This made me lose all respect for her,” one wrote.

Supporters defend Lawrence’s decision
Despite the backlash, many fans rushed to Lawrence’s defense, emphasizing that parental instincts and child safety come first.
“She didn’t abandon the dog—she made sure it went somewhere safe,” one supporter noted.
“Being cautious as a mother doesn’t make her a villain,” another added.
Others pointed out that her comments were clearly exaggerated and meant humorously, not as literal threats.
“At the end of the day,” one fan wrote, “she’s an adult making choices for her family—and that’s her right.”
