A beloved science-fiction icon who first found fame as a child star in the 1960s marked his 72nd birthday over the weekend with an energizing walk under the California sun.
Long before most kids finished grade school, his résumé already included appearances on television classics such as The Munsters, Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, Bewitched, and I Dream of Jeannie. But that was only the beginning.

He became a household name as the brilliant young adventurer on Lost in Space, a role that defined an era and later came full circle when the series was rebooted in 2018. Science fiction has been a recurring thread throughout his career—he later joined the cast of Babylon 5 and eventually took on a behind-the-scenes role as a producer for the History Channel’s long-running series Ancient Aliens.
Now in his early seventies, he’s showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, the actor-turned-musician is preparing to release a brand-new album.
Have you guessed yet?
It’s Bill Mumy.

The veteran performer welcomed his 72nd year with a scenic hike in Los Angeles alongside his wife, Eileen. Dressed casually in a cowboy hat, denim jacket, and sweatpants, Mumy looked relaxed and content as the couple made their way along a green, hilly trail.

To mark the milestone, Mumy also shared a heartfelt message with fans, expressing gratitude for decades of support and reflecting on the surreal experience of being forever remembered as a child star.

“Today is my birthday, and I’m grateful to still be here,” he said, noting that every day is something to appreciate. He joked about the strangeness of turning 72 when many people still picture him as an 11-year-old, but said he remains thankful for both his early work and his continued creative life.

He also teased upcoming projects, including a new music release and continued work on the next season of Ancient Aliens, where he serves as a co-producer. Above all, he emphasized how thankful he is for his family, including his wife, children, grandchildren, and beloved dog.
Born in San Gabriel, California, Mumy stepped into acting at just seven years old. As a teenager, he starred in the cult favorite Bless the Beasts and Children and showcased his musical talents in the emotional TV drama Sunshine.

Throughout the 1970s and beyond, he became a familiar face on shows like The Rockford Files and Matlock, while sci-fi fans later embraced him as Lennier on Babylon 5. He even made his way into the Star Trek universe—this time without alien prosthetics.
In more recent years, Mumy has continued acting, appeared in Netflix’s Lost in Space, and remained deeply involved in music. He’s released solo albums, collaborated with major artists, and found cult fame with the offbeat duo Barnes & Barnes, best known for the surreal hit “Fish Heads.”

Today, he performs with the band Action Skulls and continues balancing music, television, and family life. Married to Eileen Joy Davis since 1986, Mumy lives in Laurel Canyon with their two children.
From child prodigy to sci-fi staple to seasoned musician, Bill Mumy’s journey proves his career was never truly lost in space.
