Diane Keaton’s final Instagram post shows warmth of beloved Hollywood icon following death at 79

Fans of Diane Keaton flocked to her final Instagram post shortly after the news of the legendary actress’s death.

Keaton, celebrated for her roles in Annie Hall, The Godfather, and First Wives Club, passed away in California on October 1, 2025, at the age of 79.

Her last post, shared in collaboration with Hudson Grace for National Pet Day earlier this year, featured heartwarming images of her beloved dog, Reggie. In one snapshot, Keaton is kneeling beside her pup, pointing at a bag of dog biscuits, while wearing her signature thick-rimmed glasses and stacked silver rings.

Fans took to social media to pay tribute, remembering the actress as a brilliant and iconic presence. “A true legend. Thank you for your talent, your animal advocacy, your immeasurable charm. You will be missed,” wrote one follower. Another added, “Lost one of the greatest actors and lights of this world today.” Others expressed shock and grief, with one fan stating, “I wasn’t ready for this forever lively legend to be gone so soon,” and another saying, “I’m devastated. My favourite of all time.”

Details surrounding Keaton’s passing have not been released. A spokesperson told PEOPLE, “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”

Keaton’s illustrious career spanned over five decades, earning her an Academy Award for Best Actress for Annie Hall (1978) and three additional nominations across multiple decades. In 2024, she even released her debut holiday single, First Christmas, delighting fans.

Her co-stars and peers paid heartfelt tributes. Bette Midler, who starred alongside her in First Wives Club, said, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original… What you saw was who she was!” Ben Stiller called her “an icon of style, humor and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.” Mary Steenburge, her co-star in Book Club, added, “Diane was magic. There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend.”

Before her rise to fame, Keaton faced significant health challenges. At 21, she was diagnosed with basal-cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. She later endured a recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma in her cheek in 2011, requiring multiple surgeries. Despite these challenges, she lived a healthy and vibrant life in the years leading up to her death.

Keaton was also open about her struggles with bulimia. As a young actress, she was pressured to lose weight for roles, including her Broadway debut in Hair, leading her to hide her eating disorder for years. At the height of her struggle, she admitted consuming up to 20,000 calories a day before having to starve herself to meet Hollywood’s expectations. In 2014, she described her bulimia as “the lowest point in [her] life,” eventually overcoming it through therapy and speaking openly about her experiences.

Diane Keaton is survived by her two children, Dexter, 29, and Duke Keaton, 25. Her final Instagram post, full of love and warmth for her dog, Reggie, reflects the enduring light and compassion that fans and colleagues alike will remember her by.
