Her casting came at a turning point for the series. Anderson had struggled to balance filming both shows due to scheduling conflicts, ultimately choosing Baywatch. Her character’s exit was written as a career shift into paramedicine, paving the way for Dunning’s Heidi to take over as Tool Time assistant. Anderson later reprised her role in season six, revealing her character had completed medical training.
Behind the scenes, the part wasn’t automatically Dunning’s. Ashley Judd reportedly impressed producers during auditions but opted to pursue film instead, leaving the opportunity open. Dunning remained on Home Improvement from 1992 until the series wrapped in 1999, becoming a fan favorite across eight seasons.

Away from Hollywood, Dunning built a full personal life. She married volleyball champion Steve Timmons in 1997, and the couple had three children before separating in 2018. Eventually, though, the spotlight called her back. In 2017, she launched Debbe Dunning’s Dude Ranch Round-Up on DirecTV’s Cowboy Channel, traveling the country to explore unique ranch destinations. Today, she brands herself as a lifestyle influencer, sharing her passions for DIY projects, golf, fitness, and healthy living.
