Robert Carradine, beloved for his role in Revenge of the Nerds and as the dad on Lizzie McGuire, has died at 71. His family confirmed that he died by suicide after living with Bipolar Disorder for nearly 20 years, and they have asked for privacy as they mourn.
In a heartfelt statement to Deadline, his brother Keith Carradine spoke openly about Robert’s long struggle, calling him the emotional center of the family. He emphasized that mental illness carries no shame, describing his brother as deeply gifted, funny, wise, and endlessly accepting.
Born on March 24, 1954, Robert was the youngest son of legendary actor John Carradine and grew up in a family immersed in performance alongside brothers David Carradine and Keith. He made his film debut at 18 in The Cowboys, appearing opposite John Wayne — a role encouraged by David.
Throughout the 1970s, he built an impressive résumé with roles in Coming Home and Mean Streets, proving himself as a talent in his own right. But it was his portrayal of the earnest underdog Lewis Skolnick in Revenge of the Nerds that cemented his place in pop culture, resonating with audiences who saw themselves in the outsider-turned-hero.

Beyond acting, Carradine had a passion for music, performing with family and folk artists, and for motorsports, competing at a high level in racing during the late 1980s and 1990s.
He is survived by his children — including actress Ever Carradine — as well as grandchildren, extended family, and countless fans who remember him not just for his performances, but for his warmth and humor.
