Selena Gomez and her husband Benny Blanco spoke openly about how they navigate her bipolar disorder, including the “moments of mania” that can sometimes come with the condition.

The 33-year-old star discussed her experience on the latest episode of Blanco’s podcast Friends Keep Secrets, where they were joined by co-hosts Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco. During the conversation, Blanco asked Gomez whether she suspected something was wrong before she was officially diagnosed.

Gomez admitted she felt early on that something wasn’t right but said the path to a clear diagnosis was difficult. She explained that she had previously been misdiagnosed and described the process of finding answers as extremely complicated. According to the actress, attending several treatment programs ultimately helped her better understand what she was experiencing.

Blanco also explained that there are times when Gomez may enter a manic episode without immediately realizing it. He said she often becomes aware of it only after it has already started, and occasionally she doesn’t remember everything that happened during those moments.

The producer noted that handling those episodes requires sensitivity, since confronting someone directly while they are deep in a manic state can be challenging. However, he added that Gomez has become very self-aware and can often recognize the early signs herself, sometimes telling him she feels like she might be becoming manic.

Gomez said she now feels proud of being able to openly discuss those experiences. She emphasized that she no longer feels ashamed and has learned to recognize the warning signs more quickly. She also praised Blanco for being a supportive partner who understands how to meet her emotionally in difficult moments and help her work through them gradually.

Since receiving her diagnosis, the Only Murders in the Building star said she feels she can live more freely because she finally understands the reasons behind some of her past reactions and emotional shifts.

Gomez first publicly revealed she had bipolar disorder in 2020 during an appearance on Miley Cyrus’ Instagram Live show Bright Minded, saying the diagnosis left her feeling both frightened and relieved after years of struggling with depression and anxiety.

She has since become an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness, launching the Rare Impact Fund and hosting the annual Rare Beauty Mental Health Summit to promote conversations about emotional well-being and self-acceptance.

Gomez has also faced other health challenges, including being diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and undergoing a kidney transplant three years later.

The singer and Blanco married last year in Santa Barbara, California. During the same podcast episode, Gomez shared that she hopes to one day have a big family with Blanco, saying she imagines a future filled with grown children gathered around the dinner table—an image partly inspired by the holiday film The Family Stone, starring Diane Keaton and Sarah Jessica Parker.
