The former Grey’s Anatomy star made her first red carpet appearance in two years at a fundraiser held Sunday at the Palm Beach estate owned by Donald Trump. The 47-year-old actress was photographed alongside former Jeanine Pirro and dog trainer Cesar Millan during the event, which supported the animal welfare group Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, served as co-chair of the “Wine, Women & Shoes” fundraiser.
After criticism erupted online over the location and political ties, Heigl defended her presence, arguing that supporting animals should not be viewed through a political lens. In a statement to JustJared, she said that animal welfare should unite people regardless of political views because animals themselves “don’t vote.”

The actress also responded directly to several critics on Instagram, delivering blunt replies that surprised many followers. When one commenter mocked her judgment, Heigl questioned what meaningful work the person had done themselves. As the discussion intensified, she challenged other critics by asking whether they had personally donated money or taken action to help causes they claimed to care about.
The argument escalated further when one user joked about her character from Grey’s Anatomy, referencing the storyline involving Alex Karev. Heigl sharply responded that she was trying to help animals suffering in the country and asked whether the commenter had done anything meaningful beyond posting remarks online.
Other users who criticized her also received pointed replies. When someone questioned her relevance, Heigl said it didn’t matter who she was, emphasizing that what mattered was helping animals and encouraging people to focus on causes they cared about instead of leaving negative comments.
The actress also pushed back at accusations that she was using animal advocacy for personal gain. She insisted her activism was not profitable and said supporting rescue efforts often cost her more than she earned. In a final exchange, after one commenter suggested she had become less likable and irrelevant, Heigl replied simply by asking who the critic was.

Heigl has faced public scrutiny before during her career. She rose to fame playing Dr. Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy in 2005 and won an Emmy two years later. In 2008, she sparked controversy by withdrawing her name from Emmy consideration, saying she didn’t feel the material she had been given that season deserved a nomination — a comment many interpreted as criticism of creator Shonda Rhimes. The actress later said she regretted how she handled the situation and apologized privately.
Tensions resurfaced the following year when she described the show’s long filming hours during an appearance on Late Show with David Letterman as “cruel,” a remark she later admitted made her sound “whiny.”
She also caused debate after criticizing her 2007 film Knocked Up in an interview, describing it as somewhat sexist — comments that upset co-star Seth Rogen.
Heigl eventually left Grey’s Anatomy in 2010 after adopting her daughter Naleigh and taking family leave, ending her contract early. Since then she has continued acting in projects including Suits and the Netflix series Firefly Lane.
In recent years, she has stepped away from Hollywood’s spotlight, moving with her husband, musician Josh Kelley, to a ranch in Utah where they are raising their three children.
