While many beloved ’80s stars have stayed in the spotlight, others chose a quieter path. Phoebe Cates, best known for her role in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, is one of those who stepped away. She hasn’t appeared on screen since 2001, but her life since then has been anything but idle, as she focused on family and a completely new career.

Cates rose to fame quickly in the ’80s. Fast Times at Ridgemont High was only her second film, following Paradise, but her role as Linda Barrett made her an instant icon. She went on to star in fan favorites like Drop Dead Fred and the Gremlins films. Despite her impact, her filmography remained relatively small, with fewer than 20 projects overall. Her final on-screen appearance came in The Anniversary Party (2001), directed by her former co-star Jennifer Jason Leigh. Aside from a brief voice role in the 2015 video game Lego Dimensions, she hasn’t returned to acting.

Her decision to leave Hollywood appears closely tied to her family life. Cates and her husband, actor Kevin Kline, have been married since 1989 and share two children, Owen and Greta. After the birth of their daughter in 1994, Cates stepped back from acting, reportedly choosing to focus on raising their children while Kline continued working.

In 2005, Cates launched a new chapter by opening her boutique, Blue Tree, on Madison Avenue. She envisioned it as a highly personal “general store,” offering a curated mix of clothing, accessories, jewelry, and home goods. The shop reflects her creative taste and has become her primary focus over the years.

Creativity runs in the family. Both of her children have explored the arts—Greta as a musician performing under the name Frankie Cosmos, and Owen as a writer and producer. Despite their parents’ fame, they’ve largely stayed grounded and away from celebrity culture.
Though she left Hollywood behind decades ago, Phoebe Cates remains an enduring symbol of ’80s cinema—having traded the spotlight for a life centered on family, creativity, and independence.
