Former Disney Star Morgan York Opens Up About Leaving Acting After “Hannah Montana”

While Miley Cyrus stayed in the spotlight after Hannah Montana and launched a successful music career, one of her co-stars chose a very different path. In a recent TikTok video, former Disney star Morgan York shared why she quit acting after a successful run as a child performer. Now 28, York revealed how she moved on from Hollywood and built a life far removed from the entertainment world.

York got her start in acting as a child.

She began performing at age nine, landing her first film role in Cheaper by the Dozen (2003) and returning for the 2005 sequel. She also appeared in The Pacifier alongside Vin Diesel and had roles on shows like The Practice, Life With Bonnie, The Suite Life on Deck, and, of course, Hannah Montana, where she played Sarah in 11 episodes between 2006 and 2010.

Acting was never meant to be a lifelong career.

When York wrapped Hannah Montana at age 17, she had already decided that acting wasn’t for her long-term. Responding to a fan question on TikTok about whether she misses it, York said simply, “No,” and explained, “I never expected it to be a lifetime thing. I even remember as a kid trying to imagine myself as an adult actor and just not seeing it. I saw myself stopping acting at the very least when I started college and then just never going back.” Her mother had encouraged her from the start to step away if it ever stopped being fun, and York ultimately followed that advice.

She found a stronger passion elsewhere.

York cited the pressures of acting—the long hours on set, time away from loved ones, and constant public scrutiny—as reasons for stepping away. More importantly, she had another calling: writing. Today, York works in publishing and writes fiction, focusing on young adult fantasy novels. “My passion for writing fiction, which existed as long as my passion for acting, was just much stronger, and it was something I preferred,” she explained.

York has also drifted apart from her Hannah Montana co-stars.

She revealed in another TikTok that she hasn’t spoken to anyone from the cast since the show ended in 2010. While she follows all of them on social media, she sees the distance as natural, given that their lives have taken very different directions. “It’s not personal,” she said. “They are famous, and I haven’t been. Most people don’t even know my name.” Unlike Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment, or Moises Arias, York has intentionally stepped away from the spotlight and embraced a quieter, more private life.
