How Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen Influenced Elizabeth Olsen’s Path to Acting

During the late ’80s through the early 2000s, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were among the world’s most famous child stars. From Full House to their own movies, TV shows, books, and endless merchandise, the twins dominated pop culture. Now, having transitioned into the fashion world and mostly living out of the spotlight, the most widely recognized Olsen in entertainment is their younger sister, Elizabeth. Interestingly, Elizabeth’s decision to start her acting career as an adult rather than as a child was influenced by Mary-Kate and Ashley’s early fame.

Elizabeth was drawn to acting at a young age but was aware of what it would cost.

As a child, Elizabeth loved performing—attending dance and singing classes and immersing herself in classic musicals. However, her parents made sure she understood the sacrifices involved. “They said, ‘If you really want to act, you’ll miss out on sports, ballet, and other childhood experiences,’” she told Parade. Elizabeth tried acting for a brief period, but it didn’t feel worth giving up normal childhood activities. While she occasionally appeared in her sisters’ projects, most of her early years were spent like any other kid.

Seeing her sisters at work helped shape her decision.

Elizabeth observed Mary-Kate and Ashley’s grueling schedules from a young age—starting Full House at just six months old. “What I saw my sisters do was work, not play, and I really enjoyed ballet and sports,” she explained. Her father even encouraged her to weigh the pros and cons of acting in fourth grade. After careful consideration, she chose to prioritize extracurriculars over a childhood in show business.

She also felt self-conscious about acting as a young teen.

By her early teens, Elizabeth admits she was embarrassed by her desire to act while living in L.A., thinking it wasn’t interesting compared to her academic achievements. “I pretended I didn’t want to do it and told people I’d be an accountant because I was good at math,” she recalled. It wasn’t until high school, with guidance from a supportive drama teacher, that Elizabeth began to see acting as an intellectual and collaborative pursuit, which ultimately allowed her to embrace it in college.

Mary-Kate and Ashley’s guidance continues to influence her career.

Today, Elizabeth Olsen is a celebrated actress, known for portraying Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and starring in acclaimed indie films like Martha Marcy May Marlene and Ingrid Goes West. She credits her sisters with shaping how she handles the media, teaching her to be cautious about what she shares publicly. “If it only involves me, then I’ll share it, but if it involves another party, I won’t,” Elizabeth said, emphasizing the value of discretion she learned from Mary-Kate and Ashley.

Elizabeth’s journey shows that having famous older siblings not only gave her insight into the realities of child stardom but also helped her approach her career on her own terms.
