See What the Kid From “Free Willy” Looks Like Now

Free Willy was one of the standout child-led films of the 1990s, telling the story of a boy named Jesse who befriends and eventually frees an orca named Willy. The film introduced Jason James Richter in his first role at just 13 years old. Like many child stars, Richter’s path after the movie had its ups and downs—he stepped in and out of acting, faced some personal challenges, but remains best known for his role in all three Free Willy films. Now 41, Richter has lived a varied life both on and off the screen.

Richter has fond memories of working on Free Willy. In a 2013 interview with The Daily Beast for the movie’s 20th anniversary, he recalled interacting with Keiko, the whale who played Willy. “It was a moment of pure fascination as a child,” Richter said. “At 11, you don’t think about danger—you just think, ‘Wow, a whale! This is amazing!’” He was chosen from more than 4,000 young actors, with producers noting he had “a heart of gold but a face of trouble,” according to a 1993 interview with the Orlando Sentinel.

Following Free Willy, Richter continued acting in films and TV, including Cops & Robbersons, The NeverEnding Story III, The Client, and appearances on Sabrina the Teenage Witch. By 1998, at age 18, he stepped away from acting, explaining, “I had been on sets since I was 11. I just needed a break.”

During his time away from Hollywood, Richter pursued music, playing guitar and bass in bands such as Fermata and touring across the country. He described the experience as liberating: “No one cared that I was the kid from Free Willy. I was just one of the guys—it was all about the music.”

Richter returned to acting in 2009 with a guest spot on Bones, and later appeared in Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and The Last Rampage. In 2013, he wrote, directed, and starred in the short film The Quiet Loud. More recently, he had roles in The Little Things, starring Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto, as well as Last Call with Jeremy Piven and Taryn Manning.

Richter has also faced legal troubles. In 2018, he was arrested on charges of domestic violence and vandalism related to an argument with his then-girlfriend. The domestic violence charge was dismissed, and he pleaded no-contest to the vandalism charge, receiving probation, a short jail term, and a domestic violence treatment program. Richter denied all abuse allegations, telling Page Six, “This situation is deeply embarrassing and upsetting. My character has been defamed … the findings showed no evidence to support her claims.”

Despite the ups and downs, Richter remains remembered for the iconic role that launched his career and continues to balance acting, music, and personal growth in his life today.
