The 33-year-old singer and her 37-year-old husband have spoken openly about the star’s mental health struggles. Benny Blanco helps Selena Gomez cope with her manic episodes due to bipolar disorder.
Selena Gomez announced her diagnosis in 2020. The artist admitted to suffering from bipolar disorder. The singer struggled for a long time to understand what was happening to her, and the diagnosis came as a real relief.

Since then, Gomez has taken on the role of a champion for public honesty about mental health. In a new episode of the podcast “Friends Keep Secrets,” she shared how difficult it was for her to understand what was happening to her and the importance of not giving up.
Along with Benny Blanco, her husband and music industry partner, the pop star shared the little secrets of her struggle. “I felt like something was wrong,” Gomez admitted. “But at first, I was misdiagnosed. People just assumed, and I sought help from different specialists.”

Selena Gomez’s husband noted that she’s had moments of manic episodes she’d never even realized she was experiencing before. Sometimes, the artist only realizes what’s happening after the episode has passed. “It’s a very fine line, because talking about it when you’re in the thick of it is dangerous. But I see how she’s become more sensitive to her states,” Blanco notes. “She has a premonition of when an episode is coming, and that’s very important.”
Gomez assured me that she now lives more freely—without fear or stereotypes. She realized that her past behavior was connected to her internal state. And most importantly, she finally accepted herself. “The diagnosis doesn’t define me,” said the singer of the hit “Come & Get It .” “It’s just a description. The main thing is to seek, to speak up, to listen. There is hope. And I want people to know: they are not alone.”
