See ’90s Teen Idol Devon Sawa Now at 47

If you grew up in the 1990s, there’s a good chance Devon Sawa was one of your earliest celebrity crushes. The actor rose to fame with standout roles in Casper, Little Giants, Now and Then, Idle Hands, and later Final Destination, quickly becoming a teen heartthrob. But the intense attention also pushed him to rebel against the image. Reflecting on his career slowdown in the late 2000s, he later admitted he was burned out and struggling with heavy partying and drinking. After stepping away, he eventually regained his footing and has since returned to acting, earning renewed praise for recent performances.

Sawa has said he found it difficult to transition from teen idol to serious adult actor. Even when he took edgier roles — including appearing in Eminem’s “Stan” music video — he still felt boxed in by his earlier wholesome image. He explained that he ultimately left Hollywood, moved back to Vancouver, and got sober. During that time, he considered quitting acting altogether, tried working in real estate, and even renovated a building himself. His perspective shifted after meeting his future wife and traveling through Southeast Asia, which helped him reset both personally and professionally.

When he returned to acting, Sawa began rebuilding his career with independent projects before landing a role on the TV series Nikita from 2010 to 2013. He later appeared in Somewhere Between and guest-starred on shows such as Hawaii Five-0, MacGyver, and Magnum P.I.. In recent years, he gained attention as a recurring character in the horror series Chucky and delighted audiences with a guest appearance on the HBO comedy Hacks, where some critics even predicted awards recognition for his performance.

Off-screen, Sawa has built a stable family life. He married producer Dawni Sahanovitch in 2013, and the couple share two children — a son, Hudson, born in 2014, and a daughter, Scarlett, born in 2016. He has joked about trying to show his work to his kids, noting that his son was confused seeing him as a teenager in Casper, while his children were less enthusiastic about watching him in the darker Chucky series.

Sawa has also acknowledged that his early fame made auditions more challenging later in life, since he rarely had to audition as a child star. After returning to the industry, he described some early audition experiences as uncomfortable and discouraging. Still, he has found his footing again, carving out a career on his own terms. Now in his late 40s, Sawa says he’s genuinely content — balancing steady acting roles, family life, and a renewed appreciation for the path that brought him back into the spotlight.
