Dave Mason, the co-founder of the band Traffic and a celebrated figure in British rock, has died at the age of 79.

The legendary singer-songwriter passed away peacefully at his home on April 19, with the news confirmed in a statement shared on his official Instagram account. While an official cause of death has not been disclosed, Mason had previously battled heart-related health issues in recent years.

According to the statement, Mason spent his final hours in a quiet and personal setting. After preparing dinner with his wife, Winifred, he rested in his favorite chair and passed away calmly, with his dog by his side and surrounded by the scenic beauty of Carson Valley, Nevada—a place he deeply cherished.

Tributes described his passing as peaceful and reflective of the way he lived his life—on his own terms. His family and representatives emphasized the profound impact he had on music and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.

Mason first rose to prominence in 1967 when he co-founded Traffic in Birmingham alongside Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood. The band quickly gained recognition with albums like Mr. Fantasy and their self-titled follow-up, which featured the enduring hit “Feelin’ Alright?”.

After leaving the group, Mason launched a successful solo career in the 1970s, producing well-known tracks such as “Only You Know and I Know” and “We Just Disagree.” Over the decades, he collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, including Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison.

He also had a brief stint with Fleetwood Mac in the mid-1990s, contributing to their 1995 album Time and touring with the band during that period.

In later years, Mason faced ongoing health challenges, including a serious heart condition that led him to cancel his 2024 tour and announce his retirement from live performances in 2025.

He is survived by his wife Winifred, his daughter Danielle, and extended family. His death follows the earlier losses of his son True and his sister Valerie.

Dave Mason’s career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on rock music. His contributions continue to resonate, ensuring his place in the soundtrack of generations to come.
