Simon Russell Beale has revealed he was diagnosed with colon cancer after quietly battling the illness for the past eight months, following his withdrawal from a West End production last year.
The acclaimed performer, who appears as Ser Simon Strong in House of the Dragon, had stepped away from Titus Andronicus at Hampstead Theatre in September, with the departure initially attributed to ill health.
Beale, also known for roles in My Week with Marilyn, Mary Queen of Scots and The Death of Stalin, has now explained that he was taken to hospital shortly after completing work on the Game of Thrones prequel, where doctors discovered the cancer.

Speaking during an event at The Delaunay, the actor said he felt it was the right time to be open about his diagnosis. He admitted the past several months had been difficult, particularly because stepping away from projects was something he had never experienced before.

Despite the setback, Beale is already planning a return to the stage. He revealed he has signed on to narrate a puppet production of Shakespeare’s Venus and Adonis, which is set to tour the UK this summer. He said he had questioned whether to take the risk of returning so soon, but ultimately decided to move forward.

Following his departure from Titus Andronicus, the role was taken over by John Hodgkinson. At the time, the Royal Shakespeare Company issued a statement expressing support and wishing him a speedy recovery.
Fans and colleagues across the entertainment world are now rallying behind Sir Simon Russell Beale as he faces this difficult chapter with the same honesty and determination that have defined his celebrated career. His decision to return to work despite the challenge is being seen as a powerful sign of resilience, and many will be hoping to see the acclaimed actor back on stage and screen again very soon.
