Patrick Swayze became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars after his breakout role as Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing catapulted him to international fame in 1987.
The performance not only earned Swayze a Golden Globe nomination, but also established him as one of the era’s most beloved leading men. Over the following decades, he built an impressive film career before his death from pancreatic cancer in 2009 at the age of 57.
Alongside his Hollywood legacy, Swayze left behind a substantial fortune that ultimately became the source of tension within his family after his passing.

Patrick Swayze’s fortune
Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008, and by the time of his death the actor reportedly had a net worth of around $40 million.
One of the biggest financial successes of his career came from Ghost, in which he starred opposite Demi Moore. The blockbuster film grossed more than $500 million worldwide and became one of the highest-earning movies of its time.
He also appeared in popular films including Road House, Point Break, and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.

During the 1990s, Swayze struggled with alcoholism and later entered rehab. Afterward, he temporarily stepped away from acting to focus on life at his California ranch and spend time raising horses. Some reports have suggested his wealth could have been even greater had he not taken a break from Hollywood at the height of his career.
Beyond acting, Swayze also invested heavily in real estate. In 1983, he purchased a sprawling 4.5-acre ranch in Sylmar, California. The property later sold for nearly $3 million in 2015, while his widow, Lisa Niemi, reportedly listed the estate again in 2023 for $4.5 million.
Inheritance controversy
Only months before his death, Swayze signed a will that left his entire fortune to Niemi, his wife of 34 years.
The decision reportedly sparked conflict within the actor’s family, with his mother Patsy Swayze and brothers Sean and Don allegedly attempting to claim part of the estate.

Reports later claimed tensions escalated over the handling of Swayze’s California ranch, with some family members objecting to plans to sell the property.
In the 2019 documentary I Am Patrick Swayze, Niemi also alleged that Swayze had endured physical abuse from his mother during childhood — claims that added another layer of controversy to the already strained family dynamics following the actor’s death.
