Inside The Partridge Family star Susan Dey’s heartbreaking health battle as a child actor

Susan Dey became a household name as Laurie Partridge on the beloved 1970s sitcom The Partridge Family, but behind her rise to fame, the young actress was quietly battling serious personal struggles.

Dey was only 17 years old when she landed the breakout role that turned her into a teen idol almost overnight. While audiences adored her trademark brunette hair and blue eyes, the pressures of sudden fame and growing up in Hollywood reportedly took a heavy emotional toll.

After leaving The Partridge Family in 1974, Dey later reinvented herself with a sophisticated blonde bob while starring as deputy district attorney Grace Van Owen on L.A. Law from 1986 to 1992.

However, throughout much of her early career, the actress privately struggled with anorexia.

In a 1993 interview with The Enquirer, Dey candidly admitted that the eating disorder had deeply affected her life.

“I’m still trying to overcome my anorexia,” she said at the time. “It’s not something you can beat alone.”

Before becoming an actress, Dey worked as a model and regularly appeared in teen magazines, something many believe may have contributed to body image pressures during her formative years.

The actress also reflected on the emotional difficulty of child stardom in a 1989 interview with The Washington Post, describing the experience as being treated like an adult before truly being one.

In addition to her eating disorder, Dey also faced struggles with alcoholism later in life.

She became frustrated after tabloids exposed her attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, which she viewed as a serious invasion of privacy.

“I usually don’t talk about it because I feel it’s my business,” she told Parade. “When I had been sober for a year, someone leaked information from an AA meeting to the tabloids, and I was furious.”

Despite the personal challenges, Dey eventually stepped away from Hollywood to focus on a quieter, more private life.

She retired from acting in 2004 and has largely remained out of the public eye ever since.

Dey married television producer Bernard Sofronski in 1988 and shares a daughter with her first husband, Leonard “Lenny” Hirshan.

Although she has admitted to missing acting at times, the former star has said she feels fulfilled by the life she has built away from the entertainment industry.

“I miss acting the way you miss different chapters of your life,” she once told WSKG Public Media. “But I’m very happy with where I am now. My life feels full.”
