Star Wars and Shakespeare Actor Michael Pennington Dies at 82

Michael Pennington, the acclaimed stage performer known for his decades-long career in Shakespearean theater as well as appearances in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi and The Iron Lady, has died at the age of 82.

His agent, Lesley Duff, confirmed that the actor passed away peacefully on May 7 at Denville Hall after what she described as a long and fulfilling life and career.

Born in Cambridge, England, in 1943 and raised in London, Pennington developed an early passion for acting after seeing a production of Macbeth. He later joined the National Youth Theatre and studied English at Trinity College before launching his professional acting career with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, Pennington balanced acclaimed stage performances with appearances in British television dramas. His career became deeply tied to the works of William Shakespeare, both on stage and on screen.

In 1986, he co-founded the English Shakespeare Company alongside director Michael Bogdanov, dedicating the troupe entirely to Shakespeare’s plays. Pennington also authored several books exploring Shakespeare’s work and legacy.

He frequently collaborated with some of Britain’s most celebrated performers, including Judi Dench and Anthony Hopkins. In a 2015 interview, Pennington even credited Dench as one of the inspirations behind his decision to pursue theater after seeing her perform in a 1957 production of Hamlet.

Film audiences may best remember Pennington for portraying Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, the Imperial officer who famously tells Darth Vader that the Emperor “asks the impossible.” He also appeared opposite Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady, playing British politician Michael Foot.

Beyond his professional achievements, Pennington was remembered by colleagues for his warmth and intellect. Dench once reflected that their long friendship made performing together feel effortless because they trusted one another completely on stage.

Pennington was previously married to Katharine Barker, with whom he shared a son. His longtime partner, Prudence Skene, passed away earlier this year in April 2025.
