Where is Honey I Shrunk the Kids star Rick Moranis now after his ’80s heyday?

Rick Moranis was once one of Hollywood’s most recognizable comedy stars, thanks to unforgettable roles in beloved hits like Ghostbusters, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Flintstones.

Now 73, the actor became a household name throughout the 1980s after launching his entertainment career in the previous decade. But just as his Hollywood success was reaching new heights, his life changed dramatically following a heartbreaking personal loss.

In 1991, Moranis’ wife, costume designer Anne Moranis, died from cancer, leaving him to raise their two children, Rachel and Mitchell, on his own. The tragedy prompted the actor to gradually step away from the spotlight so he could focus on being a full-time father in New York City.

Afterward, Moranis became far more selective about the projects he accepted. While he returned for a few Honey, I Shrunk the Kids spin-offs and lent his voice to animated projects like Brother Bear, he largely disappeared from the big screen by the late 1990s.

Speaking about his decision years later, Moranis explained that balancing movie shoots and parenting simply became too difficult. Over time, he realized he did not miss acting as much as he expected and instead focused on writing and raising his children.

The actor has repeatedly stressed that he never formally “retired” from Hollywood — he simply became extremely selective. In interviews, Moranis has said he has no regrets about stepping away from fame and remains happy with the career choices he made.

Fans were surprised in 2015 when he declined a cameo in the female-led Ghostbusters reboot, despite several original cast members returning. Moranis later explained that appearing for a brief scene in a remake decades later simply did not appeal to him creatively.

In 2020, Moranis made headlines after becoming the victim of a random assault while walking near his New York neighborhood. He suffered injuries to his head, back, and hip, though a suspect was later arrested.

That same year, excitement grew when it was announced Moranis would reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski in a new Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel. However, the project was eventually shelved following delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, Moranis lives quietly on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, but fans will soon see him back on screen once again. The actor is set to reprise his fan-favorite role as Dark Helmet in Spaceballs: The New One, scheduled for release in 2027. He even made a rare public appearance at CinemaCon 2026, where footage from the highly anticipated sequel was unveiled.
