Nicolas Cage’s dedication to his craft is demonstrated by his dramatic transformation into the role of a satanic serial killer in The Soul Collector. After reading the script, he was enthusiastic about the project and worked closely with writer/director Osgood Perkins and the make-up artists to bring the disturbing character to life.

The physical transformation for Soul Collector was extensive, with detailed sculptures created to achieve the desired look. A key element of the character’s appearance was the suggestion of bad, cheap plastic surgery, which added to the villain’s frightening and grotesque nature. In addition to the physical changes, Cage also developed unique mannerisms and a sing-song voice to further distinguish the character. He wanted to create a personality that was both unsettling and memorable, completely immersing himself in the role.

Cage made Longshanks deeply personal, drawing inspiration from his late mother Joy Vogelsang’s struggles with depression and schizophrenia. As a young man, he remembered her talking to walls, an experience he found surreal and inspiring rather than disturbing.

Cage’s drive to succeed in Hollywood was fueled by his experience growing up middle class among wealthier peers. Despite his father being a professor and writer, the family lived modestly, in stark contrast to the wealth of his classmates. He felt misunderstood and disadvantaged, especially when it came to social status and connections. However, visits to his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, introduced him to a different lifestyle, instilling a desire to succeed, not just for the money, but for the prestige and sense of achievement.

The resulting character of Longshanks, who was mostly hidden in trailers, is a testament to Cage’s dedication and artistry. Heavy makeup and prosthetics make him unrecognizable, allowing him to fully inhabit the role of a disturbing serial killer. Cage’s willingness to explore the dark side of human nature, coupled with his personal connection to the character’s problems, promises a powerful and unforgettable performance.
