Gabriel Byrne—often regarded as one of the finest actors never to receive an Academy Award nomination—was recently seen during a rare solo outing in New York City.
The 75-year-old actor stepped out in Manhattan on a chilly day, dressed warmly in a zipped-up blue coat, navy trousers, and black sneakers. He completed the look with a burgundy knit beanie and a backpack as he walked through the city.

Despite a long and respected career, Byrne has yet to earn an Oscar nomination—something many fans and critics find surprising. Some believe his strongest chance came with his supporting role as Keaton in The Usual Suspects (1995), a film featuring a standout ensemble cast including Benicio del Toro, Kevin Spacey, and Giancarlo Esposito. The movie went on to win two Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Spacey and Best Original Screenplay for Christopher McQuarrie.

Earlier in his career, Byrne starred in Miller’s Crossing (1990), a key film from directing duo Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, where he played Tom Reagan, a conflicted advisor caught between rival crime factions.
He also served as an executive producer on In the Name of the Father (1993), which received seven Oscar nominations. Over the years, Byrne has built an impressive filmography, appearing in projects such as Little Women, The Man in the Iron Mask, Enemy of the State, Vanity Fair, and Hereditary. More recently, he appeared in the John Wick spin-off Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas.

On television, Byrne has earned two Emmy nominations for his role in the HBO series In Treatment, along with appearances in shows like Vikings, Maniac, and War of the Worlds. He has also received two Tony nominations for his stage work.
Off-screen, Byrne married Hannah Beth King in 2014, and the couple welcomed a child in 2017. He was previously married to Ellen Barkin, with whom he shares two children.

Even without Oscar recognition, Byrne’s career stands as a testament to enduring talent, versatility, and quiet excellence in the world of film and theater.
