Mel Gibson instantly recognized that taking on the role of William Wallace in Braveheart would be a life-changing decision. He described the script as “haunting” and said the story stayed with him long after reading it. Though initially approached to star in the film, Gibson couldn’t walk away from it. He ultimately chose to direct, saying, “I just felt I had to tell this story.”
To refine his Scottish accent, Gibson found inspiration in the legendary Sir Sean Connery. He recalled Connery casually saying “goulash” in his signature voice, which unexpectedly served as an accent lesson. “You pick it up from those around you,” he explained.
While Gibson’s powerful portrayal of Wallace solidified his status as a Hollywood icon, he remained relatively private about his personal life. One of his nine children, Milo Gibson, eventually followed in his footsteps into the world of acting.
Initially, Milo had no plans to enter the film industry. Before discovering his passion for acting, he worked as an electrician and massage therapist. “My dad always told me to do what I love,” Milo shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “And I really love acting.”
Milo’s breakout role came in his father’s 2016 war drama Hacksaw Ridge. From there, he built a steady career in action films, appearing in titles like The Tribes of Palos Verdes (2017), All the Devil’s Men (2018), and Dangerous (2021).
Despite having a famous father, Milo wasn’t raised in the glare of Hollywood. “Our parents kept us away from that world,” he noted. “It changes people.”
Thanks to his striking resemblance and natural talent, Milo often draws comparisons to his father. “People say, ‘Hey, you look like Mel Gibson!’” Milo laughed. “And I’m like, ‘Damn, I wish!’”
