Oscar-Nominated Star Confirms Long-Whispered Rumors — and Says He’s Ready for the Fallout

Viggo Mortensen has always captivated audiences with his intensity on screen, rugged charm, and fearless role choices. But off-screen, there’s been another story simmering — one that’s fueled speculation for years.

For decades, the Lord of the Rings legend has been spotted sharing warm, even lingering kisses with Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg. The sightings sparked curiosity and questions about their relationship. Now, at 66, Mortensen is addressing the whispers — and doing so with disarming honesty.

The actor, born in New York to a Danish father and American mother, lived across Venezuela, Denmark, and Argentina before returning to the U.S. at age 11. His path to Hollywood was anything but direct, working odd jobs before breaking into film in the ’80s. After a rocky start, he rose to fame with G.I. Jane and cemented his place in cinema history as Aragorn — a role he took on at the last minute, performing most of his own stunts (and even breaking toes in the process).

Mortensen met Cronenberg in 2001 at Cannes, instantly forming a creative and personal bond. They’ve since collaborated on multiple acclaimed films, including A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method, and Falling — the last of which Mortensen also wrote and directed.

When critics questioned his decision to play a gay character in Falling, Mortensen replied:
“How do you know what my life is? You’re assuming I’m completely straight. Maybe I am, maybe I’m not. And it’s frankly none of your business.”

The actor makes it clear: labels aren’t important — connection is. And his decades-long friendship with Cronenberg remains one of Hollywood’s most enduring and unconventional bonds.

Away from the speculation, Mortensen was married to singer Exene Cervenka for a decade, with whom he shares a son, and has been in a relationship with Spanish actress Ariadna Gil since 2009. Cronenberg, now 81, has been married twice and lost his second wife in 2017.

For Mortensen, love, loyalty, and artistry can’t be neatly categorized — and that’s exactly how he likes it.
