Donatella Versace is a legendary fashion designer and business mogul, carrying forward the legacy of her late brother, Gianni Versace, founder of the iconic luxury brand. After Gianni’s tragic murder in 1997, Donatella inherited part ownership of Versace and swiftly assumed the role of creative director. Over the years, she has earned acclaim as a designer, entrepreneur, and style icon, dressing countless celebrities and redefining modern fashion with her daring vision.

Born in 1955 in Reggio di Calabria, Italy, Donatella grew up immersed in fashion. Her mother was a dressmaker, and her brother Gianni had an exceptional eye for design. Encouraged by Gianni, she became his muse and collaborator, balancing studies in literature and languages with weekend trips to Milan to assist him. Her platinum blonde hair and striking presence became her signature look, helping shape the early identity of Versace, including the creation of the Versus label dedicated to her.

Gianni’s untimely death was devastating, but Donatella rose to the occasion, leading a couture show just days later and eventually becoming the face of the brand. She redefined Versace with a bold, feminist perspective, expanding its influence across pop culture. Her designs have graced Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Jennifer Lopez—the latter immortalized in her legendary “jungle dress” on the red carpet.

Beyond fashion, Donatella has left her mark on hospitality, designing Palazzo Versace hotels in Australia and Dubai. She remains a cultural icon, inspiring portrayals in TV and film and even a Lady Gaga song. In 2018, she sold Versace to Capri Holdings but stayed actively involved, confident the sale would accelerate the brand’s growth. Throughout her journey, she has emphasized strength and individuality, often advising her younger self: “Be strong, stay true, and don’t try to be Gianni.”

Her daughter, Allegra Versace Beck, born in 1986, continues the family legacy as a director at Versace since 2011. While Allegra is more reflective and private compared to her bold and daring mother, the two share a deep bond and mutual dedication to preserving and evolving the family empire. Together, they honor Versace’s storied past while shaping its future.
