She is now among the most well-known vocalists worldwide…

Today, Shania Twain is one of the most famous singers in the world, but her journey to stardom was anything but easy. Behind the glamour of chart-topping hits and sold-out tours lies a childhood marked by poverty, hardship, and trauma.

Born in Timmins, Ontario, she grew up in a struggling household. With her stepfather working low-paying jobs and her mother battling depression, Shania and her four siblings often went without the most basic necessities—food, heat, and electricity. At school, she hid her hunger by pretending she had forgotten her lunch, sometimes waiting for classmates to leave scraps behind.

Music quickly became her refuge. She would retreat into the wilderness with her guitar, building small fires and singing to escape the painful reality of her life. By the age of eight, her mother recognized her talent and began taking her to perform in local bars—often well past midnight. At fourteen, she finally began earning money for her performances, while also working shifts at McDonald’s, which she later called her “saving grace” since it provided regular meals.

But the challenges went far beyond poverty. Shania’s stepfather, who had legally adopted her and her siblings, was abusive and violent, creating a toxic and terrifying home environment. At just ten years old, she also endured sexual abuse at his hands, a secret she carried for years.

At 22, tragedy struck again when both her mother and stepfather were killed in a car accident. Suddenly, she was left to raise her younger siblings, juggling school runs, household chores, and nightly singing jobs at a nearby resort just to keep the family together.

As her siblings grew older and more independent, Shania finally had the chance to focus on her own career. She recorded a demo, and soon after, Mercury Nashville signed her—marking the beginning of her rise to international fame.

Working with producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, who would later become her husband, Shania’s unique sound exploded onto the world stage. Together, they created some of the biggest hits of the ’90s. But even at the height of success, she faced new obstacles. Years of vocal struggles were eventually traced back to Lyme disease, which damaged her vocal cords. Surgery changed her voice permanently, leaving it raspier than before, but she embraced the difference and continued creating music.

Her personal life also took a dramatic turn when she discovered her husband’s affair with their close friend and secretary, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The betrayal was devastating, but from it came an unexpected love story—Shania found comfort in Marie-Anne’s ex-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud. Their shared heartbreak grew into romance, and in 2011 they married, giving her a new beginning.

Today, Shania Twain stands as a symbol of resilience. From poverty, abuse, and devastating loss, to global superstardom and personal rebirth, she has truly lived through both extremes. She has chosen to forgive, move forward, and continue sharing her music with the world.
