Rachel Ward Responds to Criticism Over Aging With a Simple Message: “Let It Go”

Rachel Ward, best known for her role in The Thorn Birds, is speaking out after facing online criticism about her appearance at age 68. Rather than shrinking from the comments, the actress has chosen to address them with calm confidence and a message of acceptance.

During the Christmas season, Ward unexpectedly became the subject of online discussion when photos of her circulated as she promoted the Australian beef cattle farm she owns with her husband, actor Bryan Brown, 78. The couple, who met while filming The Thorn Birds in 1983, now live a quieter life managing their property together.

While many praised Ward’s natural beauty, others were less kind. Some commenters suggested she looked “older than her age” and questioned why she hadn’t tried to appear younger. The remarks, directed at her appearance rather than her work, prompted both criticism and a wave of support from fans.

On January 15, Ward addressed the situation in a thoughtful Instagram post. With gentle humor, she noted that she had made a small effort to look “a bit better,” joking about running her hands through her hair. But her central message was clear: aging is nothing to fear.

Ward said she feels happier now than she ever did when youth and physical beauty were central concerns in her life. Letting go of those pressures, she explained, has brought her peace and contentment, with no regrets attached.

She went on to praise her later years, describing her sixties as a fulfilling and rewarding chapter. According to Ward, the value of aging often isn’t understood until you arrive there and discover how much life still has to offer.

Thanking those who defended her, Ward said she was deeply moved by the support. She urged others not to obsess over holding onto youth, even acknowledging how tempting that fear can be.

Her advice was simple and sincere: let it go. In doing so, she believes, something far more meaningful takes its place.
