Alan Alda Turns 90 as Grandson Shares Sweet Glimpses from Family Celebration

Alan Alda marked a major milestone on January 28, celebrating his 90th birthday surrounded by the people closest to him. The beloved MASH* icon enjoyed a quiet, heartfelt evening with family and friends, and his grandson, filmmaker Jake Alda Coffey, gave fans a rare look at the occasion.

Jake shared photos from the celebration on X, posting a snapshot of his grandfather smiling during a dinner outing. “Happy 90th birthday to my grandpa!! He’s my biggest role model,” he wrote alongside the image.

In a follow-up post, Jake offered more glimpses of the evening, showing Alda savoring dessert at the restaurant and later enjoying birthday cake at home. “My grandpa is really touched by all the love he’s gotten today,” he shared, adding that the night was intentionally low-key and filled with laughter. After dinner, the family returned home to finish the celebration with a homemade rum cake baked by one of Alda’s friends, which Jake described as the perfect ending to the day.

The actor last spoke publicly about his health in May 2025, when he offered a characteristically witty update. “Making progress,” he said, before joking, “I didn’t say in which direction.”

Alda, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2015, has been open about navigating life with the condition. He has also shared that he lives with prosopagnosia, or face blindness, which makes recognizing people difficult. Despite these challenges, Alda approaches each day with curiosity and humor.

“Almost every day I’m finding a new way to do something,” he previously explained, likening the process to solving a puzzle. While managing Parkinson’s has become nearly a full-time effort, Alda says it keeps him searching for creative solutions — and, whenever possible, the funny side of life.
