Claire Danes has opened up about having an emotional breakdown after discovering she was pregnant at 44.

The actress revealed that she broke down in tears when she learned she was expecting her third child. Now 46, Danes recalled calling her OB-GYN while crying uncontrollably as she tried to process the unexpected news.

“It was a total meltdown,” she said during Tuesday’s episode of Amy Poehler’s Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast. “This wasn’t planned at all. I honestly didn’t even think it was physically possible. I was 44.”

The Homeland star welcomed a baby girl in 2023. She shares three children with her husband, actor Hugh Dancy: sons Cyrus, 13, and Rowan, 7, as well as their daughter, now 2. Danes pointed out that there is a five-year gap between each of her children.

She also reflected on how difficult her second pregnancy had been, explaining that Rowan was “very hard-earned” and required two rounds of IVF.

Danes previously spoke about her surprise third pregnancy in November 2025 on the SmartLess podcast, admitting she felt “terrified” when she found out. While she acknowledged feeling anxious about her age, she emphasized that everything ultimately worked out.

Still, the actress confessed to experiencing unexpected feelings of shame. “I felt like I’d done something wrong,” she said, describing the sensation as being “caught” for pushing beyond some unspoken boundary. “It was strange—it felt like I’d crossed a line I wasn’t even fully aware existed.”

Danes and Dancy, 50, have been married since September 2009. Before their marriage, she was in a relationship with Billy Crudup. Despite the highly publicized 2003 scandal involving Crudup and a then-pregnant Mary-Louise Parker, Danes and Crudup remain on good terms more than two decades later.

In April 2025, Danes and Crudup—who is now married to Naomi Watts—were seen warmly greeting each other with smiles and a hug at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Gala.
