Two decades ago, Stanislav Yanevski made his unforgettable debut as Viktor Krum — the intense, broomstick-flying Durmstrang champion who stole Hermione’s heart — in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Today, the former teen star is 40 years old and living a life far removed from the global phenomenon that once made him famous.
A role he never planned for
Yanevski’s path to acting was completely accidental. Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, he wasn’t pursuing film when fate intervened at his boarding school in Mill Hill, England. As he recalled in a 2005 interview, he was simply late registering for classes when casting director Fiona Weir noticed him and invited him to audition that same afternoon.
After a brief test and a few missed callbacks due to exams, he eventually met director Mike Newell — and landed the role that would introduce him to millions.
Becoming Viktor Krum
Playing Krum marked Yanevski’s first-ever film appearance. Representing Bulgaria in the Triwizard Tournament, his character became a fan favorite, not only for his athletic prowess but also for his shy, sweet romance with Hermione Granger.

Behind the scenes, however, the job required surprisingly tough challenges. In a recent Instagram Live, Yanevski revealed the most difficult sequence to film wasn’t flying — it was the underwater tournament task, which required specialized training and a diver’s certificate.
“You can’t see, you can’t breathe, and you can panic very easily,” he joked.
Life after Hogwarts
Although he hoped to build a long-term acting career, Yanevski ultimately appeared in only a handful of projects, including Hostel: Part II (2007) and the 2021 action film Last Man Down.

These days, he maintains a strong presence on social media, sharing fitness content, travel updates, and engaging with Harry Potter fans. Physically, he has transformed dramatically — from a lean teen into a muscular, bearded adult with a rugged look far removed from his clean-cut Quidditch champion days.
As Goblet of Fire marks its 20th anniversary, fans are rediscovering the actor who brought Viktor Krum to life — and learning that while his Hollywood journey was brief, his impact on the wizarding world remains unforgettable.
