Born in Trenton, New Jersey, the now-76-year-old actress began her career on Broadway before breaking into daytime television in 1977 on one of the era’s most popular soap operas. From there, she smoothly transitioned between drama and comedy, becoming the female lead on a beloved sitcom in the ’80s and ’90s and later taking on a standout supporting role in a hit 2000s dramedy.
Along the way, she also appeared in a film with Gwyneth Paltrow, and in recent years joined the cast of one of Ryan Murphy’s most talked-about series. Just two years ago, she finally took home her first Primetime Emmy for a guest appearance.
Spotted this week at Project Angel Food’s opening of The Chuck Lorre Family Foundation Kitchen, she turned heads in a chic black suit and bowler hat reminiscent of Diane Keaton.
The star is none other than Judith Light.
Light first captivated audiences as the scheming Karen Wolek on One Life to Live from 1977 to 1983, earning two Daytime Emmy Awards for her performance. Interestingly, she once admitted she had initially resisted doing a soap opera before realizing the depth and challenge the role offered.
She made her Broadway debut in 1975 in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House, laying the groundwork for a career that would span stage and screen. But it was television that made her a household name.
In 1984, she landed the role of Angela Bower opposite Tony Danza on the hit sitcom Who’s the Boss?. The show, which also starred a young Alyssa Milano, ran until 1992 and cemented Light’s place in pop culture history. Though her on-screen chemistry with Danza sparked romance rumors, she married actor Robert Desiderio during the show’s run — and the two remain together.
Her career didn’t slow down after the ’90s. She took on recurring roles in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Ugly Betty, and later appeared in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, portraying Marilyn Miglin in the high-profile true crime drama.
In 2024, she achieved another milestone by winning her first Primetime Emmy for a guest role on Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne.
