Why James Van Der Beek Earned ‘Nothing’ from Dawson’s Creek – Family Faces Financial Strain After Medical Bills
JAMES Van Der Beek reportedly earned “no money” from his iconic role in Dawson’s Creek due to a clause in his original contract that excluded earnings from reruns and streaming deals.

The actor tragically passed away on Wednesday after a two-year battle with colorectal cancer.
In the wake of his death, friends set up a GoFundMe to help his wife, Kimberley, and their six children, who are reportedly struggling to stay in their home amid mounting medical expenses.
Van Der Beek first rose to fame in 1998 as Dawson Leery on the popular teen drama. Despite the show’s lasting popularity, which continues years after its 2003 finale, he revealed that he did not benefit financially from reruns or streaming revenue.

Speaking to Today in 2012, James admitted, “There was no residual money. I was 20. It was a bad contract. I saw almost nothing from that.”
Following his passing, the GoFundMe for his family has already raised over $1 million. The page reads:
“In the wake of this loss, Kimberley and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and his extended battle with cancer have left the family financially stretched. They are working hard to remain in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”

James and Kimberley share six children: Olivia, 15; Joshua, 13; Annabel, 12; Emilia, 9; Gwendolyn, 7; and Jeremiah, 4.
After his cancer diagnosis in 2023, James also worked with Propstore to sell off his Dawson’s Creek memorabilia to help cover his medical expenses, highlighting the financial strain he and his family faced during his illness.
