’90s TV fans did a double take this week after one of the decade’s most recognizable sitcom stars was spotted out in Los Angeles.
Now 71, the actress — whose godfather happens to be legendary producer Norman Lear — looked effortlessly stylish during a casual Monday outing. Wrapped in a crisp white sweater, faded jeans, and a sleek black coat, she radiated understated elegance — a far cry from the leopard-print, big-haired bombshell she famously played on Married… with Children.

The polished appearance was also a contrast to some of her later roles: portraying Kaley Cuoco’s mom on 8 Simple Rules, embodying fierce matriarch Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, or appearing on Shameless alongside Emmy winner Emmy Rossum.

If you’re thinking Katey Sagal — you got it.
Born Catherine Louise Sagal in Los Angeles on January 19, 1954, her first creative love wasn’t acting but music. In the mid-1970s, she contributed vocals to various projects and worked with artists such as Bob Dylan, Etta James, and Tanya Tucker. She also performed as part of Bette Midler’s backup group, The Harlettes, and lent her voice to film soundtracks, including Loose Cannons in 1990.

Her acting breakthrough came in the mid-’80s, but it was her role as Peg Bundy — the sarcastic, scene-stealing wife with sky-high red hair — that made her a household name. Married… with Children ran for a decade, from 1987 to 1997, cementing her status as a sitcom icon.
After that era-defining run, Sagal seamlessly transitioned between comedy and drama. She voiced Leela on Futurama, earning a devoted fan base, and later returned to primetime sitcoms with 8 Simple Rules alongside John Ritter. Her move into heavier dramatic territory with Sons of Anarchy brought critical acclaim and proved her range extended far beyond comedy.

Over the years, she’s continued to rack up credits, appearing in series like The Big Bang Theory, Superior Donuts, Dead to Me, and Mayans M.C., as well as films including Pitch Perfect 2 and Bleed for This. In 2014, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — a fitting tribute to a career spanning more than five decades.
Off-screen, Sagal has been married to writer-producer Kurt Sutter since 2004, and they share a daughter, Esmé, born via surrogate in 2007.

Reflecting on her longevity in Hollywood, Sagal has expressed gratitude for still landing roles that excite her. And judging by her radiant appearance in LA this week, she’s not just still working — she’s still thriving.
