A 90s heartthrob who once captured hearts opposite Lara Flynn Boyle now looks almost unrecognizable — can you guess who it is?

The actor, famous for his role in a cult supernatural murder mystery series, was spotted on Tuesday in Los Angeles walking his dog, appearing far removed from his days as a screen idol. The 59-year-old New York native kept things casual in a black zip-up hoodie, grey jeans, and black sneakers. His signature raven hair is now a thinning buzz cut, and a full grey beard frames his face, giving him a strikingly different look than fans remember.

Later in the day, his 57-year-old actress wife, with whom he shares a son, was also seen out. She sported a relaxed plaid blue button-up shirt, ripped blue jeans, and cozy UGG boots, carrying a brown handbag with her blonde hair pulled into a casual updo.

The actor in question is none other than James Marshall, best known for portraying the brooding James Hurley in the 1990 series Twin Peaks. Hurley, the motorcycle-riding secret boyfriend of murdered prom queen Laura Palmer (played by Sheryl Lee), captured the hearts of audiences with his quiet intensity, while Lara Flynn Boyle played Donna Hayward, Laura’s best friend.

Marshall was a regular on both seasons of the original series, which aired from 1990 to 1991, and reprised his role in the 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, directed by David Lynch. In 2017, he returned for the Showtime revival, Twin Peaks: The Return.

Outside of Twin Peaks, Marshall appeared in films like A Few Good Men (1992), Gladiator (1992), and Cadence (1990). However, his career faced a major setback in 2010 following a high-profile $11 million lawsuit against pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-LaRoche. He claimed the acne medication Accutane caused gastrointestinal injuries that led to a four-month hospitalization and the surgical removal of his colon, which he said derailed his momentum in Hollywood. Ultimately, the lawsuit was unsuccessful.

More recently, Marshall appeared as Kane in the 2022 series The Pact. Though he’s no longer the raven-haired heartthrob of the 90s, his iconic portrayal of James Hurley continues to resonate with fans decades later.

Marshall has been married to actress Renee Griffin since 1998, and together they maintain a low-profile family life in Los Angeles.
