Maddox Jolie has officially dropped his father’s surname, following in the footsteps of his sister Shiloh Jolie, who legally removed “Pitt” from her name eight months earlier. The 24-year-old’s decision became public after he was credited as Maddox Jolie, rather than Maddox Jolie-Pitt, in the end credits of his mother Angelina Jolie’s new film Couture, which recently debuted in French cinemas.

Maddox, who worked as an assistant director on the drama, was similarly listed under his new name when the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025. Previously, on Jolie’s biopic Maria, Maddox had been credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt while working as a production assistant.
The Jolie-Pitt family includes Maddox’s siblings Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 19, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 17. Shiloh made headlines last year when she legally became Shiloh Jolie shortly after turning 18, with her lawyer emphasizing it was a personal decision made after “painful events” and done strictly through legal process.

Reports have suggested Pitt’s relationship with his older children remains strained, with minimal contact between him and Maddox or Pax, and reduced interaction with the younger children due to his work commitments. Previous name changes within the family include Vivienne being credited as Vivienne Jolie on a 2024 Broadway playbill, and Zahara introducing herself publicly without Pitt’s surname while at Spelman College.
Jolie and Pitt finalized their divorce in December 2024 after an eight-year legal battle, which included disputes over their French vineyard and estate following Jolie’s sale of her stake to billionaire Yuri Shefler. Neither parent has publicly addressed Maddox’s decision to drop the Pitt surname.

Recently, Pitt spoke about the importance of family, acknowledging the need to cherish loved ones and the value of surrounding oneself with people who reciprocate that love. However, sources indicate he considers his relationship with Pax and Maddox “unfixable” while still hoping his younger children might reconnect with him over time. Jolie’s representatives counter that any fractured bonds are a result of Pitt’s past actions and urged him to take responsibility if he wishes to rebuild relationships.
