The mystery star is John Tesh.
The 73-year-old musician and former television personality — who rose to prominence in the 1980s — made a rare public appearance at the Guild of Music Supervisors Awards in Los Angeles. A New York native, he looked healthy and polished in a blue suit, black tie, and glasses.
Tesh previously co-hosted Entertainment Tonight and also made headlines decades ago for briefly dating media icon Oprah Winfrey when they were both working at competing TV stations in Nashville in the 1970s. Reflecting recently on their romance, he admitted it was “very uncomfortable” at times due to the social climate, noting that interracial relationships were still considered unusual in the South. Despite outside reactions, he said they handled the attention with humor and mutual respect. The pair eventually parted ways as their careers took off, though he recalled knowing even then that Winfrey was destined for greatness.
Tesh later married actress Connie Sellecca, known for her role on the 1980s series Hotel. The couple wed in 1992 and share a daughter, Prima.
In recent years, Tesh has been candid about his health struggles. He first battled prostate cancer in 2015, when doctors warned it could be terminal. The frightening prognosis led him into a dark period marked by heavy drinking while on pain medication — until, he said, his wife intervened and urged him to keep fighting.
In 2020, he suffered a relapse after waking up with severe leg pain, later learning that two tumors had formed around his pelvis. Treatment included surgery, chemotherapy, the removal of his prostate, and the loss of function in one kidney. He credited Sellecca for becoming his fiercest advocate, educating herself extensively about his illness and helping guide his care.
Though he has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years, Tesh remains recognized for both his music career and his time as a national TV host — as well as for personal chapters that have spanned Hollywood, serious illness, and an early romance with one of the most influential women in media.
