’80s sitcom mom who acted with Martin Short then became a soap star is still radiant at 74… who is she?

A familiar face from one of the most beloved sitcoms of the 1980s was recently spotted in Los Angeles, looking vibrant and stylish at the age of 74. The actress, still sporting her signature platinum-blonde hair, first began her career in the 1970s. One of her earliest roles was in a short-lived sitcom alongside Martin Short. Although the series was praised by critics, it struggled with ratings and was canceled halfway through its first season.

Her real breakthrough came in the late 1980s when she was cast as the mother in a nostalgic coming-of-age television comedy that would later become a fan favorite. The show remains widely remembered by viewers who grew up watching it and continues to evoke strong nostalgia decades later. Over the years, the actress also became a respected presence in daytime television, earning two Daytime Emmy Awards for her performances in soap operas.

During her recent outing in Los Angeles, she showed off a relaxed California look. She wore a black-and-white striped tank top layered over a white T-shirt, paired with black sweatpants, UGG slippers, and a casual jacket. Dark butterfly-style sunglasses, a shiny bracelet, and several necklaces—including one with a jeweled cross—completed her laid-back ensemble.

The actress is none other than Alley Mills, best known for playing Norma Arnold, the warm and supportive mother in the hit ABC series The Wonder Years, which aired from 1988 to 1993. The story centered on suburban teenager Kevin Arnold, portrayed by Fred Savage, and his family as they navigated life during the social changes of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Born in Chicago in 1951, Mills grew up in a creative household—her father worked as a television executive, while her mother edited American Heritage magazine. Her stepmother was the French cabaret performer Genevieve (cabaret singer), who later became a comedic television personality.

Mills eventually transitioned into soap operas, joining The Bold and the Beautiful in 2006 as Pam Douglas and later appearing on General Hospital as the villainous Heather Webber, a role that earned her multiple Daytime Emmy Awards.

In her personal life, she married television personality Orson Bean in 1993. The couple remained together until his tragic death in 2020, when the 91-year-old actor was fatally struck by two cars while crossing a street in Los Angeles. Despite the hardships she has faced, Mills continues to radiate energy and charm, proving that her star power has endured for decades.
