Mary Elizabeth McDonough became widely known for playing Erin Walton on the classic series The Waltons, which followed a large family living on a Virginia farm from the Great Depression through World War II. The show ran from 1972 to 1981, and McDonough appeared throughout its entire run, later returning for six TV movie sequels. Now 60, she has remained active in creative work while also exploring new paths beyond acting.
Despite the years that have passed, McDonough has said the cast of The Waltons remains close. She’s shared that they still gather for celebrations and reunions, maintaining the strong bond they formed while working together on the long-running family drama.
After the show ended, McDonough continued acting in both television and film. She took on guest roles in popular series including The Love Boat, ER, Ally McBeal, The West Wing, and Will & Grace, and later had a recurring part on The New Adventures of Old Christine. While acting remained part of her life, she also branched out into writing.
McDonough has authored several books, including the memoir Lessons from the Mountain: What I Learned from Erin Walton. She later released the novels One Year and Christmas on Honeysuckle Lane, the latter of which was adapted into a Hallmark Channel movie in 2018, with McDonough appearing in a supporting role.
Beyond entertainment, she became a certified life coach and public speaker, inspired by her own struggles with self-esteem and body image during her years on The Waltons. Through workshops and one-on-one coaching, she focuses on helping others build confidence and feel comfortable in their own skin.
McDonough has also been open about her health journey, including living with lupus and advocating for awareness about potential risks associated with breast implants. In her personal life, she has been married twice and is the mother of a daughter, Sydnee. Today, she continues to share glimpses of family moments while occasionally reconnecting with her former castmates — proving that her connection to The Waltons remains an important part of her story.
