Actor James Tolkan, best known for playing the strict Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future films and Commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian in Top Gun, has died at the age of 94. His management confirmed that he passed away on March 26 in Saranac Lake, New York.
A crew member who worked with Tolkan on Back to the Future shared warm memories, recalling how much he enjoyed interacting with fans at conventions. Despite portraying tough and intimidating authority figures on screen, Tolkan was described as kind and playful in real life, often joking with admirers and recreating his famous “slacker” moments from the film. Those who met him said his personality was the complete opposite of the stern characters he portrayed.

Born in Michigan, Tolkan later lived in Chicago before settling in Tucson, Arizona, where he graduated from Amphitheater High School in 1949. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After his military service, he moved to New York City and studied acting with renowned teachers at the studios of Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg. He also appeared in the original Broadway ensemble of Glengarry Glen Ross.

Throughout his career, Tolkan collaborated with director Sidney Lumet in several films, including Serpico (1973) alongside Al Pacino, Prince of the City (1981), and Family Business (1989). One of his most memorable roles came in 1985 when he played the tough high school vice principal Mr. Strickland in Back to the Future, directed by Robert Zemeckis. He later reprised the role in the sequel and portrayed an ancestor of the character in Back to the Future Part III. He also appeared in the 1986 hit Top Gun as Stinger, the commanding officer to Tom Cruise’s character.
Tolkan continued acting in film and television until 2011. He later settled in the Lake Placid area, where he built a home in 1996 to display the art he had collected over the years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Parmelee, and three nieces. His family noted his love for animals and encouraged donations in his memory to Humane Society organizations.
