Grease stars then and now – see their jaw-dropping transformation 48 years on

Nearly five decades after Grease first hit theaters, the beloved students of Rydell High continue to captivate audiences. The 1978 musical became an instant classic, packed with unforgettable songs, romance, and high-energy performances — and fans are still just as eager to revisit the cast who made it iconic.

Olivia Newton-John starred as the sweet and shy Sandy Olsson, whose dramatic transformation at the film’s finale became one of cinema’s most memorable moments. Following the movie’s success, she became a global pop culture icon, later appearing in films like Xanadu and Two of a Kind. Newton-John died on August 8, 2022, after a decades-long battle with cancer, leaving behind a lasting legacy in music and film.

Opposite her, John Travolta brought Danny Zuko to life with his leather jacket, slicked-back hair, and rebellious charm. The actor went on to enjoy a long and successful career and continues to work steadily, with recent projects including the 2025 thriller High Rollers and several films currently in production, including a reported new romantic musical.

Stockard Channing played the sharp-tongued Pink Ladies leader Rizzo, whose confident attitude made her a fan favorite. The Oscar-nominated actress has remained active, with recent appearances in Knuckles and Julia, and is expected to reprise her role as Aunt Franny in an upcoming Practical Magic follow-up.

Didi Conn charmed audiences as Frenchy, the lovable beauty school dropout known for her pink hair and memorable musical number. She continues acting and recently appeared in the 2025 teen comedy Overcompensating, as well as other television projects.

Dinah Manoff portrayed Pink Lady Marty Maraschino. After a successful career that included sitcoms like Empty Nest and stage work, she eventually stepped away from acting but still celebrates her achievements, including her Tony Award win.

Jeff Conaway played Kenickie, Danny’s loyal best friend and fellow T-Bird. Conaway continued acting in film and television before his death in 2011, with his final roles appearing shortly before he passed away.

Jamie Donnelly appeared as Jan, the quirky Pink Lady remembered for her humorous moments. She remains active in both film and theater, with recent credits including Stationed at Home and Better Half, while also maintaining a strong presence on stage.

Michael Tucci played Sonny LaTierri, one of the mischievous T-Birds. Known for later roles in films like Blow and The Heat, Tucci has taken occasional breaks from acting but continues to appear in projects, including the 2024 mystery thriller PinkCity.

Though the cast has taken different paths over the years, their roles in Grease remain timeless. Decades later, the film’s music, fashion, and unforgettable characters continue to resonate — proving that the Rydell High gang still has audiences singing along all these years later.
