Heath Ledger’s $16.3 million fortune was not originally left to his daughter, Matilda Ledger, following his tragic death at just 28 in January 2008. The The Dark Knight star, also known for 10 Things I Hate About You, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind an estate that did not reflect his later life.
The reason was largely due to timing. Heath had drafted his will in 2003—two years before Matilda was born—which named his parents and sisters as the sole beneficiaries of his estate. At that point, he had not yet met Michelle Williams, with whom he would later share his only child.

Despite the initial legal setup, Heath’s family quickly made their intentions clear. His parents, Kim and Sally, along with his sisters Kate, Olivia, and Ashleigh, chose to give the entire inheritance to Matilda, saying it was what Heath would have wanted. They emphasized that both Matilda and Michelle were central to their lives and would always be supported.

In fact, Heath’s father later confirmed that there was never any real dispute over the estate, explaining that the decision to pass everything on to Matilda was made immediately after his son’s passing.
Beyond his family, several of Heath’s close friends also stepped in. Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law reportedly donated their earnings from The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, stepping in to complete the film after Heath’s death. Director Terry Gilliam praised their gesture as both generous and deeply meaningful.

Today, Matilda lives in New York City with her mother Michelle, who is now married to theater director Thomas Kail. Although she has largely been raised away from the spotlight, she remains connected to the entertainment world through family friends and mentors, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Busy Philipps, and Jeremy Strong, who have all played meaningful roles in her life.

While the original will did not include her, the final outcome ensured that Heath Ledger’s legacy—and his fortune—ultimately belonged to his daughter.
