The fight between the dog and the wild predators lasted about half an hour.
A sheepdog from John Wierwiller’s farm in Georgia (USA) single-handedly dealt with eight coyotes, thereby saving a flock of sheep and a herd of goats. According to the farmer, the dog named Casper managed to kill eight coyotes in a bloody fight that lasted about half an hour. After that, Casper disappeared for two days.
“We knew the dog was injured because we found parts of his tail, blood, and other evidence of a fight. We were very worried about him,” said John Wierwiller.
When Casper finally returned home, his owner discovered serious wounds on his side and neck – it looked like coyotes had partially torn off the dog’s skin.
“When Casper came back, he looked at me as if he wanted to say: ‘Boss, stop looking at how bad I look and just take care of me,'” the farmer noted.
The LifeLine Animal Project, an organization that tries to stop the euthanasia of healthy animals, learned about Casper and decided to help with the costs of his treatment. As a result, they raised $15,000 for the dog: now the organization’s veterinarians are working on his rehabilitation.
“The coyotes’ behavior in the Casper case was strange. These animals rarely form large packs. Most likely, the predators were attracted by lambs, of which there were quite a few in the flocks that were attacked,” said Berry College biology professor Chris Mowry.
