As Top Gun prepares to soar back into theaters for its 40th anniversary, fans are taking a nostalgic look at what became of the film’s unforgettable cast.
The iconic 1986 blockbuster will return to select AMC theaters for a limited one-week run beginning May 13, alongside special double-feature screenings of its hit sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. The event gives longtime fans — and a new generation — the chance to experience both films on the big screen.

While Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer famously reprised their roles as Maverick and Iceman in the 2022 sequel, many original cast members were absent, leaving fans wondering where life took the stars of the original film.
Cruise, now 63, was already on the rise before playing Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, but Top Gun helped catapult him into global superstardom. He went on to headline major hits including Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, and the hugely successful Mission: Impossible franchise, cementing himself as one of Hollywood’s biggest box office draws. Top Gun: Maverick later became one of the highest-grossing films of his career, earning nearly $1.5 billion worldwide.

Kilmer, beloved for his portrayal of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, sadly died in April 2025 at age 65 after battling throat cancer. Despite severe health challenges that permanently affected his voice, he returned for an emotional appearance in Maverick — his final major screen role. Kilmer was also widely recognized for playing Batman in Batman Forever and musician Jim Morrison in The Doors.

Meg Ryan, who portrayed Goose’s wife Carole Bradshaw, became the queen of romantic comedies in the 1990s with hits like When Harry Met Sally…, Sleepless in Seattle, and You’ve Got Mail. Though she later stepped back from Hollywood, Ryan admitted she felt burned out by fame and wanted a different pace of life. She was not invited to return for Maverick, a decision director Joseph Kosinski said reflected the sequel’s focus on new characters and storylines.

Kelly McGillis, who played Maverick’s love interest Charlie Blackwood, also did not return for the sequel. McGillis previously revealed she never expected to be asked back, explaining that she had long since moved away from the pressures of Hollywood and shifted her focus toward family and personal wellbeing. Although she stepped away from major studio films, she continued acting in smaller TV and independent projects over the years.

Anthony Edwards portrayed Maverick’s best friend Goose, whose tragic death became one of the original film’s most memorable moments. Though Goose did not physically return in Maverick, his legacy remained central through the introduction of his son, Rooster, played by Miles Teller. Edwards later found even greater fame starring as Dr. Mark Greene on the hit medical series ER.

Michael Ironside, who played instructor Jester, revealed he declined involvement in the sequel due to a long-standing falling out with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Despite that, Ironside continued building a successful career with projects like Total Recall and Starship Troopers.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Tom Skerritt, who played mentor Mike “Viper” Metcalf, did film a small scene for Maverick tied to Iceman’s funeral, though it ultimately did not make the final cut. At 92, he remains active in Hollywood with occasional film appearances.
Directed by the late Tony Scott, Top Gun became one of the defining films of the 1980s, blending high-flying action with unforgettable characters and turning much of its cast into household names. Four decades later, the film’s legacy continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
