Bruce Campbell, a 64-year-old retired electrical engineer, has always been a creative person. As a young man, he bought 10 acres of woodland near Hillsborough for about $23,000 with a clear goal: to transform an old airplane into a unique home.

Campbell has always loved taking things apart and putting them back together to give them new life.

He originally planned to build a home out of old abandoned shipping containers, but after learning that a Mississippi hairdresser named Joanne Ussery had already converted a Boeing 727 into a home, he changed his plans.

Ussery, after a fire destroyed her previous home, decided to live in a plane parked next to a river, which inspired Campbell to improve his design.

In 1999, he bought a Boeing 727 from Olympic Airways for $100,000 and moved it to the Oregon woods.

Shipping the plane from Greece cost him another $120,000 or so, but Campbell was confident the investment was worth it.

Today, the interior of the plane is equipped with everything necessary: the original bathroom, several seats, and a washing machine and sink have been preserved.

Although the plane has plenty of space, Campbell lives a frugal lifestyle – his kitchen is equipped with a microwave and toaster, and he eats mostly cereal and canned goods.

Although life on a plane is not for everyone, Campbell’s project is impressive. This life project, so original and ambitious, is a real success!
