Lauren Draper, a 22-year-old mum from Cardiff, experienced an unusual fourth pregnancy when her belly grew to an unusually large size due to a condition called polyhydramnios. The condition, which causes an excessive build-up of amniotic fluid, prompted surprised comments from strangers, some of whom jokingly suggested she was carrying multiple children.

Lauren, who had previously experienced a milder form of polyhydramnios during her first pregnancy, began to notice her belly growing rapidly around 29 weeks, significantly affecting her daily activities. The excess fluid was occurring because Lauren’s unborn baby was not swallowing it as it normally would, causing her uterus to rapidly expand.

By 34 weeks, her belly had become so huge that many passersby doubted its authenticity, with some even suggesting it was fake or artificially enlarged. The enormous size of her belly also caused physical discomfort, including bruising on her ribs and significant difficulty moving.

When Lauren’s water broke at 34 weeks and four days, the dramatic reduction in the size of her belly was immediately noticeable. However, the relief was short-lived as she began bleeding due to a ruptured placenta, requiring an emergency C-section. Lauren herself lost a significant amount of blood and had to wait seven long hours before she was finally able to meet her baby Olive. Unfortunately, Olive was born not breathing and had to be resuscitated before being placed in an incubator due to breathing issues.

Despite the challenges and frightening complications of the birth, baby Olive continues to battle breathing problems in the hospital. Lauren remains hopeful and confident in her daughter’s strength and ability to recover.

Lauren’s experience serves as a remarkable example of the physical and emotional impact such conditions can have on expectant mothers. The public’s reaction to her unusually large belly, from disbelief to humor, highlights the rarity of such cases.
