“My brother is gone, lonely old age”: how the destiny of the twins from the film “The Nannies” came out thirty years later

The premiere of the film “Nannies” occurred in 1994. The film was shot and released in the United States, however the American audience was unimpressed with the comedy. Despite the enormous popularity, the fate of the performers who portrayed the principal roles is bleak. None of them were successful in their careers as cinematographers.

The main characters were played by genuine brothers, David and Peter Paul. Strong bodybuilders that were enthusiastic in athletics from a young age.

The brothers were born in 1957. David is one minute older than Peter. Both were dedicated to American football, wrestling, bodybuilding, and powerlifting, and by the age of twenty, they were already bench pressing 200 kg. In the late 1970s, the restless twins resolved to dominate the world of cinema. And they left to find happiness in faraway sunny California.

We didn’t even have money for a luggage; we just packed our basic possessions in a knotted sheet,” the boys remembered. – So we flew to Los Angeles.

Film makers admired the upbeat, powerful musclemen. True, in Hollywood, the Paul brothers were instantly granted one key condition: they must always film together. And to certainly flaunt their massive muscles on camera.

Interesting fact: despite their incredible stature, the Paul brothers never practiced professional bodybuilding and did not compete in competitions like Arnie. They only appeared as honored guests at the Arnold Classic and Mr. Olympia competitions, when they presented the awards. However, they went to the gym 6-7 times per week.

The brothers made their film début in 1983 with “Washington Taxi”

And the hooligan brothers played their first prominent parts in the unpopular 1987 picture “Barbarians,” a fantasy counterpart to Schwarzenegger’s “Conan the Barbarian.”

They wanted to nominate us for the Golden Raspberry Award for the worst performers of the year for that picture, the brothers said, but we were not angry because it was vital for us to just act in films. We simply wanted to be flashy and draw attention to ourselves.

So the Paul brothers bravely entered the world of major film, straight from under the bars of a typical regional amateur gym.

The Paul brothers achieved great success in 1994. Along with those same “Nannies” (in the original – The Twin Sitters – Nannies-twins), where our heroes practically portrayed themselves: harsh, funny musclemen, as if living in the frame. The filmmakers wouldn’t even change their names!

“Our heroes in the film have exactly our personalities,” the brothers laughed.

It’s been thirty years since the cult picture was released. Feel like a rockstar, bro; feel extremely old.

I find it fascinating that neither of the brothers had a successful cinematic career. The Pauls only appeared in a few episodes after “The Nannies”. Then they almost forced themselves into acting, appearing in 12 films.

They appear solely in a couple of forgettable 2000s films: “Soulless” and the thriller “White Horse Is Dead”. The brothers’ last appearance was in the 2013 film “The Inn on the Corner of Faith Street”.

Yes, both brothers were married, but they did not have a successful family life, as they had no children. David experienced a catastrophic illness; according to one story, he was crippled for a year as a result of heavy steroid use. And as a result of the divorce, his wife sued the unfortunate guy for practically all of his substantial property:

I probably spent too much time at the gym, constantly forgetting about my sweetheart. Which was the cause of the divorce. My wife took everything from me. But it doesn’t matter; it’s irrelevant. Money and automobiles do not make people happy, David, who has become a recluse, admitted in one of his few interviews.

In 2020, all lovers of “Nannies” heard tragic news. There are no longer two brothers named Paul… David died in his sleep at the age of 64, and he was discovered in his own bed at home. Hugging his own dog, Cowboy, who died just two days after his owner departed.

The actual causes of the actor’s death are not mentioned anywhere. The only thing said is that these are not forbidden substances or alcohol. Heart difficulties, stress, and frequent anxiety were most likely contributing factors.

Left alone, Peter Paul has withdrawn within himself. He hardly seldom leaves the house and does not give interviews. Lives half-forgotten in lonely old age…. Brother is no more…
