I called a plumber and instead of fixing the problem, he lit a match and threw it in the toilet

I called a plumber and instead of fixing the problem, he lit a match and threw it in the toilet – but why?

It all started the day when a persistent unpleasant smell appeared in my bathroom.

Neither air fresheners, nor strong cleaning products, nor general cleaning helped – the air remained saturated with an unpleasant aroma. 🚽

After trying all the usual solutions, I decided to call a plumber.

An elderly, calm and apparently experienced man came. I described the problem to him, and without saying a word, he took a box of matches out of his pocket, lit one… and threw it into the toilet. I was completely shocked 😲 — was this supposed to solve the smell problem?

And indeed, yes! He explained to me that the smoke emitted by the sulfur at the end of the match quickly neutralizes unpleasant odors.

After burning, the match leaves only a slight smell of smoke, much more pleasant than the original aroma.

Since then, I always keep a box of matches on hand in the bathroom and use this trick whenever there is a suspicious smell.

But that’s not all. In my search for other natural ways to keep my bathroom fresh, I discovered some very simple and effective ideas:

  • A bowl of ground coffee or just beans: they absorb unpleasant odors and give the room a warm, pleasant aroma.
  • A mixture of baking soda and vinegar: great for cleaning pipes. A spoonful of baking soda, half a glass of vinegar, wait a few minutes – and rinse with hot water.
  • A few drops of essential oil on the inside of the toilet paper roll: lavender, lemon or mint – to your taste.
  • Activated carbon: in a small container, it absorbs both odors and excess moisture in the room.
