A 12-year-old boy from Georgia suffered severe burns after a sleepover prank went tragically wrong

A 12-year-old boy from Georgia suffered severe burns after a sleepover prank went tragically wrong, allegedly when his friends poured boiling water on his face while he slept.

Trey West was spending New Year’s Day at a neighbor’s apartment in Tifton with three boys aged 12 to 15. While Trey slept, the others were playing video games—until one reportedly poured scalding water on him, causing painful injuries. His mother, Tiffany West, described the moment as shocking, enraging, and heartbreaking. The “prank” left Trey with second-degree burns that required immediate medical attention.

He was rushed to a burn center in Augusta, where he underwent surgery. Doctors estimate a 12–14 day recovery period, though he may face lasting physical and emotional scars. “You have to be in shock to realize your friends are capable of this,” said his aunt, Nachelle Austile, noting that Trey has been emotionally numb since the incident.

The three boys involved were arrested but later released to their families, pending court hearings next month.

The local community has rallied around Trey, offering donations and messages of support. In heartfelt Facebook posts, his mother expressed gratitude, calling her son a “warrior” and thanking God that the situation wasn’t worse. She later shared updates that Trey was healing well, sleeping in his own bed, and might soon return to school.

One particularly heartwarming moment came when Tiffany shared a video of Trey smiling and dancing with his baby sister, captioned: “He’s healing beautifully! Nobody but God.”

This tragic event serves as a sobering reminder of the serious consequences of reckless pranks and the importance of teaching young people empathy, accountability, and the weight of their actions.
